Heart of Darkness: Representations of the Balcans in Recent World Cinema

The paper is concerned with the exploration, analyses and systematization of the ways the Balkans and ex Yugoslavia are imagined, represented and constructed in the world cinema. Theoretically it is based on the concept of the gaze which actively constructs the stereotypes of the Other circulating in the world cinema. The representational patterns that emerge are revealed to be modeled under numerous and diverse influences, and to fall into three distinctive categories (romantic, ironic, traditional historical), amiably wandering between two poles – the romantically positive one, and the brute, ugly, negative one, that over attentive nations think to be dominant.
